Letter: Get 46th District candidates to debate

Published in Albany Times Union on September 2, 2018

I recently attended a meet-and-greet event with Pat Strong, a Kingston Democrat candidate for state senator for the 46th District, and I stopped by the table at the Altamont Fair for incumbent Sen. George Amedore, R-Rotterdam.

The issues they raise are local as well as general; as a matter of fact, many of the state issues reflect the same urgent themes we hear of constantly on the national stage. Issues like health care, supporting small businesses, gun safety and ethics reform in government deserve as much attention on the local level as they do on the national level. That's why I'm hoping that both candidates, Mr. Amedore and Ms. Strong, will volunteer to debate publicly these and other issues so that we the voters can be better informed as the November elections approach.

We are a divided nation, it's true, but we still have use of our reason, our common sense and our ability to weigh the evidence and make an informed choice. A public debate will go a long way toward helping us make the right choice.
